drive it day 2012, köln (1)

Saisonauftakt
Start of the season
Last sunday was "Drive-It-Day" for the first time in Cologne. On the initiative of the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (MAKK) all veteran cars with historic car registration had been invited to the inner city to celebrate the start of the season, a tradition that dates back to the UK and takes place there each year since 1900. Thanks to warm temperatures and mostly good weather, the premiere of this event enjoyed an active participation of vehicles and visitors. From prestige brands to bread-and-butter vehicles, from cars, buses and vans over two-wheelers to tractors, from Swedish to American manufacturers, from pre-war to classic cars, a huge diversity of vintage cars could be admired, almost nothing that didn't at least pass a flying visit. While in front of the museum cars were driven onto a ramp and explained during the whole day, there was an Open Day inside with a special exhibition for automotive design. With Citroën Germany being the main sponsor of this event, the focus of the exhibition was on the brand, too: inside there were two current Citroën prototype studies and a series of work models and drawings of different Citroën types, outside around the building there were several specially invited Citroën veterans from DS, GS, Mehari and Ami6 to 2CV. But also other brand's vehicles were shown, 36 in total number, including a Cadillac DeVille Convertible of 1969, a Meadows Frisky of 1957 or a Mazda Cosmo of 1968. For this purpose, there were many hundreds of visitor cars, that cruised their rounds around the museum's block during the whole day or could be admired on one of the different parking spaces between MAKK, Kolumba and Opera. Facing such a tremendous amount of public visitors, that this event has attracted throughout the day, you may surely call this a complete success and now look forward to coming vintage car season and 2nd Drive-It-Day next year.
